Why a good-looking website still gets few enquiries
When a site isn't bringing in leads, looks are rarely the reason. Usually the right people aren't arriving, they can't tell you serve someone like them, getting in touch is slow or unclear, or the page is so slow on a phone that they leave.
A redesign that only changes the look fixes none of these. So we start with business questions. Who is this page for? What did they search? What do they need to believe before they call? What's the one next step? Design follows the answers.
After launch, our software checks daily for silent problems: a form stops sending, a plugin update changes a canonical tag, an edit removes the heading a page ranked for. We catch them before you notice fewer enquiries.
Before choosing a project
Four reasons a website brings in few enquiries
Check these in order. A redesign only fixes the second and third, and it's the most expensive way to find that out.
Are the right people arriving at all?
Yes: Traffic is fine. Move to the next question.
No: It's a visibility problem. The fix sits outside the website.
Can they tell in seconds that you serve someone like them?
Yes: The page matches what they searched for. Move on.
No: It's a positioning problem. A new look won't fix it.
Is getting in touch quick and easy?
Yes: The route is clear enough. One question left.
No: It's a conversion problem. Cut steps, show one next action and fix the form on mobile.
Is it fast on a phone, on a normal mobile connection?
Yes: None of the four explains it. Look at the offer, and at what happens after someone enquires.
No: People leave before they see anything else. Nothing lower on the page can make up for it.
Before you start a project
Rebuild, redesign, or improve what you have?
Three very different projects with very different costs. Here's how to tell which one you need.
| Dimension | Improve what exists | Redesign | Rebuild |
|---|---|---|---|
| Right when | Traffic is decent and the structure is sound, but few visitors enquire | The site works but looks and reads like an older version of your business | The structure can't show what you sell, or the platform gets in your way |
| Typical work | Copy, layout, forms, speed and tracking on key pages | A new design system and templates, mostly keeping the current structure | A new content model, structure and build, plus a full migration |
| Search risk | Low | Moderate, because templates and internal links change | High if it's run as a design project |
| Time | Weeks | Two to three months | Three to six months, sometimes longer |
| How it goes wrong | Endless small tweaks with no clear idea behind them | A new look that leaves the business problems untouched | A migration nobody planned until launch week |
How we build
Four things we plan before design starts
The search structure
Which pages you need, what each is for, what it's called and where it sits. Get this wrong and you'll spend years working around your own site.
The path to an enquiry
What a visitor needs to believe before they contact you, what proof helps, and the next step on every page. Every layout gets a clear job.
The content model
Services, industries, locations, people and case studies set up as separate content types. Your site can grow from thirty pages to three hundred without a rebuild.
The speed budget
We set page weight limits before we build anything. Speed can't be bolted on at the end; it comes from many small decisions along the way.
How it works
How we design and build your website
Strategy and structure
We look at your audience, what they search, your competitors and how people will enquire. You get an agreed sitemap, content model and page briefs. No mood boards.
You get: Sitemap, content model, page briefs
A design system, then pages
We design the components and rules for type, colour and spacing, then build pages from them. It's faster, more consistent, and you can add pages later without a designer.
You get: Design system and key templates
Build
Pages render on the server where search needs it. We stick to the speed budget and build in accessibility from the start.
You get: A working site on a staging server you can use
Content and migration
We write or move content, map URLs, plan redirects and test tracking. It runs alongside the build, so nothing is left for the last week.
You get: Redirect map and a pre-launch checklist
Launch and watch
We launch on a day when everyone is around, then watch indexing, errors, speed and enquiries closely for the first few weeks.
You get: Monitoring and fixes after launch
Standards
What every site we build has to meet
These go into the project scope, which is why some builds take longer than a template would.
Every build ships with
- Core Web Vitals inside Google’s published thresholds on mobile, measured on real devices
- WCAG 2.2 AA as the accessibility target, tested with a keyboard and a screen reader
- Key content in the HTML the server sends, so it doesn't depend on scripts
- A complete redirect map, checked before launch
- Conversion tracking set up and tested before go-live
- Full ownership of code, content, accounts and notes from day one
What we won't do
- Add a hero video that slows your site on mobile because it looks good in a pitch
- Hide key content behind a click to make the layout look cleaner
- Build on a platform you can't leave
- Leave accessibility until after launch
- Launch a redesign without a migration plan
Questions
Common questions about web design and development
Will we lose our search rankings when the new site launches?
Not if the relaunch is planned as a migration, because that's what it is. We map every URL that has value and plan redirects before the build, and carry internal links, canonicals, structured data and sitemaps across on purpose.
Some short-term movement is normal. A long slide after a redesign isn't, and it can be prevented.
How long does a website project take?
A focused marketing site usually takes eight to fourteen weeks from kickoff to launch. Bigger sites with lots of content, locations or integrations take longer.
Content and approvals move the date more than development does. We plan around them and tell you early if something is holding things up.
What do you build on?
Whatever fits your business. For content-heavy sites we like a modern framework with a headless CMS: it's fast and handles services, industries and locations as separate page types.
If you need WordPress, Shopify or the platform you already have, we work in it.
Do we own everything at the end?
Yes. The code, design files, content, domain, hosting and analytics sit in your accounts from the start.
You can move the site to another team without asking us or paying a release fee.
Can you work with our existing site instead of rebuilding it?
Often, yes. If the structure is sound and the problem is conversion, improving your busiest pages beats a rebuild for a fraction of the cost.
We tell you which situation you're in before we quote a build. Rebuilding a site to fix a copy problem is an expensive mistake.

What web design & development covers
Website Redesign
Our website redesign services keep the pages that already bring you visitors and enquiries. We measure your traffic first, then map every old URL to its new home.Conversion Rate Optimisation
Conversion rate optimisation that gets you more enquiries from the traffic you already have. We fix what stops visitors, and A/B test only when your traffic supports it.Landing Page Design
Landing page design for paid campaigns starts with message match: each page repeats what the ad promised and asks for one action. Everything else supports that or goes.Core Web Vitals & Site Speed
Our Core Web Vitals optimisation service fixes the speed problems your visitors feel on their own phones, judged by their data, not a test-tool score.Headless CMS Development
Headless CMS development that starts by checking whether you need it. It pays off when you publish to several channels; for one site and one team, it usually adds cost.
Need a rebuild, or a better version of your site?
Show us your site and what it isn't doing for you. We'll tell you which of the three projects you need, even when the answer is the cheapest one.
