SEO audit checklist

What an SEO audit checks

Every full BOOSTD audit scores the same 42 areas, grouped into 9 families. This is the checklist — what each one looks at, in plain words.

Technical SEO

10
  • Technical SEO

Whether search engines can read your site at all — broken redirects, blocked pages, duplicate signals.

  • Crawlability & Indexing

Whether your pages can be found, and whether they are allowed into search results.

  • Site Architecture

Whether your site is organised so people and search engines can find what matters in a few clicks.

  • URL Structure

Whether your web addresses are short, readable and consistent.

  • Internal Linking

Whether your pages link to each other in a way that helps people and search engines find your best content.

  • External Linking

Whether the links off your site point somewhere real, relevant and safe.

  • Structured Data (Schema)

Whether your pages include the machine-readable markup that helps search engines understand and enhance your listing.

  • International / Hreflang

Whether the right language or country version of a page is shown to the right visitor.

  • Duplicate Content Control

Whether the same or near-identical content appears on more than one address, splitting your ranking signal.

  • Scalability & CI Blind Spots

Whether pages your team believes are live are reachable — a common gap is a finished page that 404s once it ships.

Search Visibility

4
  • Keyword Targeting

Whether each page is clearly aimed at the searches your customers use.

  • Search Intent Alignment

Whether a page gives searchers what they were looking for, not just the right keyword.

  • Keyword Cannibalization

Whether several of your own pages are competing with each other for the same search term.

  • Search Result Click-Through

Whether your search listings are written in a way that makes people want to click, and whether they do.

Content Coverage

12
  • On-Page Optimization

Whether the basics, like your title, headline and opening paragraph, reflect what the page is about.

  • Title Tags

Whether each page has a unique, right-length title that makes someone want to click it in search results.

  • Meta Descriptions

Whether each page has a short summary that shows under its title in search results.

  • Heading Structure (H1–H6)

Whether your pages use headings to lay out a clear outline, the way a reader and a search engine expect.

  • Content Quality

Whether the writing is specific, accurate and useful, not generic filler.

  • Content Depth & Completeness

Whether a page covers its topic fully enough to be the best answer available.

  • Topical Authority

Whether your content, taken together, covers a topic thoroughly enough that search engines trust you on it.

  • Blog / Content Hub

Whether your blog or resource section is fresh, consistent and worth returning to.

  • Programmatic SEO Quality

For sites with many similar pages (city pages, service variants): whether each one earns its place instead of looking like a copy-paste page.

  • Content Cannibalization

Whether several of your pages cover the same topic so closely that they compete with each other.

  • Content Freshness

Whether your content is kept up to date, and whether "last updated" dates reflect real changes.

  • Over-Optimization Risk

Whether keyword use or link patterns look unnatural enough that search engines could penalise them instead of rewarding them.

E-E-A-T / Trust

3
  • Entity Consistency

Whether your business name, description and identity are described the same way everywhere search engines look.

  • E-E-A-T / Trust

Whether your content shows real experience, expertise, authority and trustworthiness — the signals search engines weigh for who to trust.

  • Brand / Authority Signals

Whether your brand name is described consistently and does not get confused with another business online.

Website Experience / Performance

6
  • Image SEO

Whether your images have useful alt text, sensible file sizes, and load without slowing the page down.

  • Performance

How fast your pages load and respond.

  • Core Web Vitals

Google's specific speed and stability measurements: how fast content appears, how quickly the page responds, and how much it jumps around while loading.

  • Mobile Experience

Whether your site works properly on a phone: text size, tap targets, and whether content fits the screen.

  • Semantic HTML

Whether your pages use the right HTML elements for their job (headings, lists, landmarks), not generic boxes for everything.

  • Accessibility

Whether people using a screen reader, keyboard-only navigation, or a low-vision setup can use your site.

AI / LLM Visibility

3
  • Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Whether your content is structured so it can be lifted directly into a featured answer or voice response.

  • Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention and recommend you when asked about your category.

  • AI Search Readiness

Whether AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot and similar) are allowed to read your site at all.

Local Presence

1
  • Local SEO

Whether your business shows up correctly for people searching nearby: your Google Business Profile and listing consistency.

Conversion Readiness

2
  • Conversion Readiness

Whether the page makes it obvious what to do next and removes friction from doing it.

  • Measurement & Analytics

Whether you can see what's happening: analytics and tracking installed and working correctly.

Authority / Backlinks

1
  • Off-Page Readiness

Whether other reputable sites link to yours, which search engines treat as a vote of confidence.

    Verified

    • All 373 pages return a real 200 over HTTPS, with clean, self-referencing canonical tags.
    • robots.txt and the sitemap are accurate, and every page arrives fully built in the first response.

    Issues found

    • Plain-HTTP requests to alternate hosts (the www and old domains) take two hops to reach the live site instead of one.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • Search Console coverage and crawl stats.

Add a one-step redirect straight from the alternate hosts to https://tryboostd.com.

  • 02Crawlability & IndexingExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • 35 pages that used to be blocked from search are now live and indexable.
    • The sitemap and the live site agree exactly: nothing indexable is missing, and nothing listed 404s.

    Issues found

    • 10 finished guides sit in the codebase without a route, so each one 404s.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • The real indexed count in Google Search Console.

Publish the 10 orphaned guides, or delete them so they stop existing as dead weight.

  • 03Site ArchitectureStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Every page links back to its parent and its children — nothing sits more than two clicks from the homepage.
    • A breadcrumb trail runs on every indexable page.

    Issues found

    • The homepage and the /locations/ hub get almost no links from inside other pages’ body copy.

Add a few natural links to the homepage and /locations/ from related pages.

  • 04URL StructureExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • URLs are lowercase, hyphenated and consistent. None run over 90 characters. No parameters, no IDs.

    Issues found

    • A few slugs use "optimization" instead of "optimisation" — cosmetic only.

Leave the URLs as they are. Changing an established address does more harm than the spelling does.

  • 05Keyword TargetingStrong8/10

    Verified

    • 45 pages carry an explicit note on the exact keyword they own.
    • Sampled pages put the main topic in the title, the heading and the opening sentence.

    Issues found

    • 10 fully-planned guides are not live yet.
    • The /locations/ hub does not use the keyword cluster it was built around.

Publish the guides, and match /locations/ to the keywords it was meant to target.

  • 06Search Intent AlignmentStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Sales pages open with the offer and a free scan.
    • Guides answer the question first, then go deeper.

    Issues found

    • Industry pages call BOOSTD a "marketing agency." The platform pages call it a "platform," for the same reader, asking the same question.

Publish the page that reconciles the two framings, and link them to each other.

  • 07Keyword CannibalizationExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • 381 keyword groups checked automatically. Only one overlap found.

    Issues found

    • "Why is my website not converting" is targeted by two pages at once.

Re-target one of the two pages before the second one goes live.

  • 08On-Page OptimizationStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Headings lead with the topic, and the keyword sits in the first sentence.
    • FAQs, internal links, sources and a call to action appear on every template.

    Issues found

    • Title tags and meta descriptions need the same fixes listed in those two categories.

Apply the title and description fixes below.

  • 09Title TagsStrong7/10

    Verified

    • 366 unique titles, none over 60 characters. No duplicates anywhere on the site.

    Issues found

    • 13 UK city titles all read "[City] SEO & Digital Marketing Services" — no differentiator, on the most competitive terms on the site.
    • A few titles end on a vague phrase instead of a real benefit.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • Real click-through rate from Search Console.

Give each UK city title its own local angle, and each vague ending a specific benefit.

  • 10Meta DescriptionsStrong7/10

    Verified

    • Every page has a unique description, 120–158 characters, with the keyword first.

    Issues found

    • Only 32% of descriptions carry a call to action.
    • The homepage, /platform/ and /how-it-works/ have none.
    • 3 descriptions run long enough to risk being cut off in results.

Add "get a free scan" to the top pages’ descriptions, and trim the 3 long ones.

  • 11Heading Structure (H1–H6)Excellent9/10

    Verified

    • No missing H1s, no skipped heading levels, and no two pages share the same heading sequence.

    Issues found

    • Some sector hub pages draw from a pool of only 3–4 repeated subheadings.

Write more heading variations for the sector hub pages.

  • 12Content QualityStrong7/10

    Verified

    • Copy is specific and true to the site, even on the pages built from a template.
    • Real regulators are cited by name. Every page missing a local office says so.

    Issues found

    • One footer line appeared on every page and needed rewriting.
    • A repeated link label and a couple of leftover phrases needed fixing.

Rewrite the footer line and the leftover phrases, sitewide.

  • 13Content Depth & CompletenessStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Service, industry and location pages cover the problem, the process, what’s included, FAQs and sources.

    Issues found

    • 3 tools and 7 glossary terms are thinner than the site’s usual depth.

Grow the glossary and the tools pages steadily, the same way the rest of the site was built.

  • 14Topical AuthorityNeeds work6/10

    Verified

    • SEO, local SEO and AI search each have a strong cluster of guides and reference pages behind them.

    Issues found

    • Social media: 7 service pages, 0 supporting guides.
    • Branding: 7 service pages, 1 guide.
    • Paid media and growth channels each have only a few guides.

Write 3–4 guides for each thin pillar, each one linking back to its service page.

  • 15Internal LinkingExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • No orphaned pages. No links that pass through a redirect. No single link module carries too much weight.

    Issues found

    • One author page links to 367 pages, acting like a second sitemap.
    • The homepage, /sitemap/ and /locations/ each get very few links from inside other pages.

Trim the author page’s links, and add a few natural in-body links to the three thin pages.

  • 16External LinkingStrong8/10

    Verified

    • About 500 links out to primary sources — Google, regulators, named statutes.
    • 150+ of those were checked with a real browser, and every block traced back to bot protection, not a dead page.

    Issues found

    • One regulator link (an Australian spam-rules page) timed out for two different checking tools.

Open that one link in a browser and replace it if it’s dead.

  • 17Structured Data (Schema)Strong8/10

    Verified

    • Zero markup errors sitewide.
    • FAQ markup matches the visible text on all 350 pages that carry it.
    • No fake ratings anywhere.

    Issues found

    • The three free tools are marked up as software. The paid platform, the thing BOOSTD sells, is not.

Add software markup to the platform page, linked to its real prices.

  • 18Entity ConsistencyStrong7/10

    Verified

    • Name, phone, email, logo and location are identical across every page and every piece of markup.

    Issues found

    • A different company with a near-identical name exists, and no page says the two are separate businesses.

Add one plain line on the About and Press pages, and in the schema description, saying the two are different companies.

  • 19E-E-A-T / TrustStrong7/10

    Verified

    • A real founder page.
    • Honest "not yet reviewed by a lawyer" notices where they’re true.
    • No invented testimonials or results anywhere.

    Issues found

    • Every page is written and approved by one person so far.
    • No case studies, reviews or author photo yet.

Add real case studies and reviews as they exist. Add an author photo and an editorial review credit.

  • 20Image SEOExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • Modern image formats, responsive sizing and lazy loading below the fold, on every page.
    • An image sitemap lists 336 images.

    Issues found

    • Optimised images are cached for 1 day instead of a year.

    Raise the image cache time.

  • 21PerformanceExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • Fonts load once, not repeatedly.
    • The homepage’s JavaScript stays inside its budget.
    • Pages are pre-built and served from a CDN.

    Issues found

    • The same cache-time gap covered under Image SEO.

Raise the image cache time (as above).

  • 22Core Web VitalsStrong8/10

    Verified

    • 14 mobile speed tests: zero layout shift on every single one.
    • Response time is fast, 80–180ms, everywhere tested.

    Issues found

    • About half the templates load their main content between 2.3 and 2.6 seconds, right at Google’s 2.5-second "good" line.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • Real-world speed data, which needs enough real visitors for Google to measure.

Look at the hero font and the CSS loading order for more headroom.

  • 23Mobile ExperienceExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • No sideways scrolling on any of 373 pages at phone width.
    • Wide tables scroll inside their own box instead of breaking the page.
    • Buttons and links are large enough to tap accurately.

    Issues found

    • The narrowest common phone width was not tested literally, only the next size up.

    Nothing needed now.

  • 24Semantic HTMLExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • Real landmark regions, a proper breadcrumb list, tables with captions, and buttons and links used correctly for what they do.

    Issues found

    • A few page sections (like the conclusion and the call to action) have no accessible label.

Add a label to those sections.

  • 25AccessibilityStrong8/10

    Verified

    • A full accessibility score on 7 of 10 page templates.
    • Every menu works from a keyboard alone.
    • Every form field carries a real label.

    Issues found

    • The "read the privacy policy" link beside every form has no underline and too little colour contrast to pass without one.

Underline that link on every form.

  • 26Local SEOStrong7/10

    Verified

    • No fake local-business markup anywhere.
    • Each city page was checked and is different from the others, not a template with the name swapped in.

    Issues found

    • 58 city pages from a fully remote business is a harder pattern to justify, however true each individual page is.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • A Google Business Profile — there isn’t one, by design: BOOSTD is remote, with no office to list.

Hold the set at its current size. Add real local proof (client work) where it exists.

  • 27International / HreflangNeeds work5/10

    Verified

    • One English version of the site, used consistently, with no broken language tags.

    Issues found

    • All 373 pages declare Canadian English, including the US, UK, Australian and UAE pages.
    • 18 of the 19 US city pages use British or Canadian spelling instead of US spelling, 46 instances in total.

Run a US-spelling pass on the US location pages, and set the language tag per market.

  • 28Blog / Content HubStrong7/10

    Verified

    • 44 articles carry full author and article markup, breadcrumbs, and related links.

    Issues found

    • Every article’s "last updated" date is identical.
    • No set schedule yet for revisiting time-sensitive guides.
    • Only one author so far.

Only change a date when a page’s content changes. Add a review schedule to time-sensitive guides.

  • 29Programmatic SEO QualityExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • Industry and location pages are each individually written. A similarity check found no two siblings read alike.
    • Real data is spliced in, not placeholder text.

    Issues found

    • Sector hub pages reuse a small set of subheadings.

Write more heading variations for the sector hub pages.

  • 30Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)Excellent9/10

    Verified

    • FAQ answers open with the answer, not a preamble.
    • Definitions, step lists and comparison tables appear where they help.
    • Question markup matches the visible text.

    Issues found

    • A few AI-focused guides are written but not published yet.

    Publish them.

  • 31Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)Strong7/10

    Verified

    • Clear definitions, consistent terms, and named sources throughout.

    Issues found

    • No original research or data of our own yet.
    • The name collision with a similarly-named company (see Entity Consistency).

    Can’t verify from the site

    • How AI assistants answer questions about us today.

Publish real data as soon as we have it. Fix the entity collision.

  • 32AI Search ReadinessStrong7/10

    Verified

    • Every page is plain, crawlable HTML.
    • AI crawlers are allowed in.
    • The llms.txt reference file is complete across 367 pages.

    Issues found

    • The same entity collision and missing original data covered under GEO.

    Same fix as GEO.

  • 33Search Result Click-ThroughStrong7/10

    Verified

    • Breadcrumb trails and clear, topic-first titles show in search results.

    Issues found

    • The same generic UK titles and missing calls to action covered under Title Tags and Meta Descriptions.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • Real click-through rate, which needs Search Console data.

Same fix as Title Tags and Meta Descriptions.

  • 34Conversion ReadinessStrong8/10

    Verified

    • One clear main action (the free scan) that works.
    • Phone, email and call booking are all real and reachable.
    • Each page’s call to action matches what that visitor is looking for.

    Issues found

    • No testimonials exist yet to put next to the call to action.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • The real conversion rate from visits to enquiries.

Add real proof as soon as it exists. Never invent it in the meantime.

  • 35Duplicate Content ControlStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Canonical tags, one consolidated domain, and no duplicate pages from URL parameters.

    Issues found

    • No automated check catches near-duplicate pages across the 160+ pages built from a template, though manual spot-checks were clean.

Add a similarity check to the site’s automated checks.

  • 36Content CannibalizationStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Every overlapping topic cluster has a note on which page owns it, and cross-links to the others.

    Issues found

    • The same overlapping search term covered under Keyword Cannibalization, plus the agency-versus-platform framing overlap.

Same fix as Keyword Cannibalization and Search Intent Alignment.

  • 37Content FreshnessNeeds work6/10

    Verified

    • Prices match exactly across every page that quotes them.
    • No outdated year references found anywhere.

    Issues found

    • Every "last updated" date, on all 366 pages, reads the same day. True today — but meaningless if it happens on every deploy.
    • No review schedule yet for statistics that change over time.

Only move a date when a page’s real content changes. Add a review schedule to time-sensitive pages.

  • 38Brand / Authority SignalsNeeds work6/10

    Verified

    • One consistent brand name, logo and voice across the whole site.

    Issues found

    • No case studies, testimonials or social profiles exist on the site yet.
    • The name collision with a similarly-named company is unaddressed.

Add real profiles and proof as they exist. Fix the entity collision.

  • 39Off-Page ReadinessStrong7/10

    Verified

    • A sourced cost guide, three free tools and a glossary — all things other sites could plausibly link to.

    Issues found

    • No original research or data of our own exists yet to be the thing people cite.

    Can’t verify from the site

    • Actual backlinks and referring domains.

Publish one real data asset, using our own numbers.

  • 40Measurement & AnalyticsStrong8/10

    Verified

    • Analytics runs behind proper consent, with nothing tracked before a visitor agrees.
    • Calls to action and form submissions are tracked as events.

    Issues found

    • The site isn’t verified with Bing Webmaster Tools yet.

    Add the Bing verification tag.

  • 41Scalability & CI Blind SpotsStrong7/10

    Verified

    • Metadata, canonical tags, schema, the sitemap and internal links all generate from one system, checked automatically.

    Issues found

    • 10 finished content files were never connected to a route, and the automated check could not see them — it only checks pages already wired in.

Add a check that every piece of finished content is either routed, or explicitly marked as not ready.

  • 42Over-Optimization RiskExcellent9/10

    Verified

    • No keyword stuffing, no hidden text, no fake FAQs anywhere — all 1,800+ visible questions are real.
    • Footer links stay within a sensible range, and call-to-action links don’t double as keyword bait.

    Issues found

    • The same small repeated-heading pattern noted under Heading Structure.

Widen the heading variety, as above.

What to fix first

The 10 gaps most likely to matter

  1. Ten finished guides are live 404s

High. Publish or delete them, and add a check so it can’t happen again.

  2. A similarly-named company shares far too much of our name

High. Add one plain line on the About and Press pages, and in the schema description.

  3. Four service pillars have almost no supporting content

Medium. Social media has 0 guides, branding has 1 — write 3–4 guides for each.

  4. Locale signals don’t match the target markets

Medium. Run a US-spelling pass on US pages, and set the language tag per market.

  5. UK city titles are generic

Medium. Carry each page’s local angle into its title.

  6. A few leftover phrases we’d flagged for removal are still live

Medium. Rewrite the footer line and the other leftover phrases.

  7. The paid platform has no product markup

Medium-low. Add it, linked to the real prices on /pricing/.

  8. The highest-traffic pages’ search snippets have no call to action

Low-medium. Only 32% of descriptions carry one — add "get a free scan" to the top pages.

  9. Every "last updated" date reads the same day

Low for now, a habit to fix before it repeats. Only move a date when a page’s content changes.

  10. Small accessibility and speed margins

Minor. Underline the privacy-policy link beside forms, and look at load speed for more headroom.

In full

Every finding, sorted into four lists

The same four lists a BOOSTD audit always produces, for our own site.

1. Critical issues

None. No page is broken, blocked or wrongly indexed, and nothing puts the site at risk of a penalty.

2. High-impact improvements

  • Publish or delete the 10 finished guides that exist in code but 404 live, and add a check so it can’t happen again.
  • Add a short line on the About and Press pages, and in the schema, saying BOOSTD isn’t the similarly-named marketing company.
  • Write guides for the pillars with none: social media (0 guides), branding (1), and the paid and growth channels.
  • Give the 13 UK city titles their own local angle instead of the same generic wording.
  • Use US spelling on the US location pages, and set the right language tag per market.

3. Minor / polish

  • Rewrite the one leftover footer line, a repeated link label, and a couple of other leftover phrases.
  • Add software markup to the platform page.
  • Add a call to action to the homepage, platform and how-it-works descriptions, and fix three vague title endings.
  • Underline the privacy-policy link beside every form.
  • Trim the author page’s 367 links, and add a few natural links to the homepage and the locations hub.
  • Only move "last updated" dates when the content changes.
  • Widen the heading variety across the sector hub pages, and check one citation link that timed out.

4. External verification required

  • Search Console: indexed pages, coverage, and manual actions.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools verification.
  • Backlinks, referring domains and brand mentions.
  • Real search rankings, keyword volumes and conversions.
  • Real-world speed data, which needs real visitors first.
  • Whether AI tools confuse BOOSTD with the similarly-named company.
  • A Google Business Profile — there isn’t one, by design: BOOSTD is remote, with no office.

How scoring works

10 points, minus what we can prove

Every category starts at 10. We only take points off for something we can point to and show — a missing tag, a broken link, a page that doesn’t exist yet.

One serious problem can only take so many points off a category that otherwise does a lot right. Several smaller issues can still add up to the same amount.

A category we can’t verify from outside the site, like real rankings, backlinks or a Google Business Profile, is never scored. We show it as “can’t verify” instead of guessing a number, on your audit or ours.

The 42 category scores roll up into the one number at the top, weighted by how much each one tends to matter for search.

A full SEO audit checks how easily search engines can read your site, whether your titles and content target the right searches, how fast your pages load, whether AI tools can find and trust you, and whether your site is set up to turn visitors into customers. BOOSTD’s audit checks 42 separate areas, grouped into 9 families, and this page shows all of them scored on our own site.
What is an SEO audit checklist?
It’s the list of everything an audit checks, grouped into families: technical setup, search visibility, content, trust, AI visibility, website experience, local presence, conversion and off-site authority. The scorecard below is that checklist, with a real score against each item.
Is this a real audit, or an example?
It’s real. This is our own audit of tryboostd.com, run on 24 September 2026, scored the same way we’d score your site. Nothing on this page is invented.
What does "cannot verify" mean on the scorecard?
Some things can’t be checked by reading a website: real search rankings, backlinks, reviews, a Google Business Profile. We say so instead of guessing a number, and a category we cannot verify is never scored as though we checked it.
How is each category scored?
Every category starts at 10 points. We take points off only for something we can point to and show, like a missing tag or a broken link. One serious problem can only take so many points off a category that otherwise does a lot right, and several smaller issues can still add up to more. A category we cannot verify is left out of the score, not guessed.
Will my SEO audit look like this one?
The 42 categories will be the same. The findings won’t be. Some categories won’t apply to every business — Local SEO, for example, if you only sell online — and your own audit will have its own issues, scores and fixes.
