Start here

Google does not give you a page. It keeps a record about your business, lets you correct it, and can change or remove it.

That explains most of what frustrates owners. A stranger can suggest new opening hours. A category you never picked can appear. A profile that was fine for six years can be suspended with no warning.

So a profile needs looking after every month, not just setting up once. A record someone else keeps can change at any time.

Your listing

Everything your Google Business Profile can show

Most businesses have filled in about a third of this. Several empty parts decide which features your listing can show at all.

  • Verification status and method, which affects how easily you can win back ownership later
  • The business name, which must match your signs and paperwork
  • One main category plus extra categories, which together decide which features you get
  • The services list, which Google suggests from your categories and you then fill in
  • Products, where your category allows them, with photos, prices and descriptions
  • Attributes such as accessibility, payment methods, amenities and identity details
  • Regular hours, holiday hours and extra hour types such as delivery or senior hours
  • The business description, which people read when comparing you with two or three others
  • Photos and video, including ones uploaded by the public
  • Posts, which expire, so they need a regular schedule
  • Questions and answers, which anyone can ask and anyone can answer
  • Messaging, booking links and your website link, tagged so you can see the visits they bring
  • Your address or service area, and which of the two your business is allowed to use
  • Owner and manager access, which tends to get messy over the years

Who edits your listing

Many edits to your listing are not made by you

Two groups change the same profile. Only one of them tells you when it happens.

Who changes a business listing.

Changed by you

  • Owner and manager access on an account you still control
  • Verification that survived your last few staff changes
  • What Google’s rules allow in the name and address
  • Big edits made one at a time, spread over days

Changed by someone else

  • Edits suggested by members of the public
  • Updates Google takes from other sources it trusts
  • Data companies pushing details onto the same record
  • A suspension that arrives with no warning

Risks

Five ways businesses lose control of their listing

There are extra words in the business name.
A name like "Ashford Plumbing — Emergency Plumber, Boiler Repair, 24/7" is not the name on the van. Extra words break Google’s rules, and competitors can report them, so a profile that carried them for years can be suspended overnight.
Nobody works at the listed address.
Google will not accept a virtual office, a shared desk, your accountant’s address or a home address with no staff there during listed hours. Businesses that travel to customers can hide their address and list a service area instead.
Nobody knows who owns the listing.
Profiles get set up by an intern, a franchisee, a supplier or an old agency. Getting ownership back means a formal request to whoever holds the account now, and a wait. Sort it out before a crisis, not during one.
Other people are editing it.
Public suggestions, automatic updates and data companies all edit the same record. With nobody watching, a wrong "closed" label or phone number can sit there for weeks while the calls dry up.
Everything changed on the same day.
Changing the name, address, category and hours of an established profile all at once often triggers a review. We make big changes one at a time, with the proof ready beforehand.

How we work

What we will and won’t do to your listing

Everything else in local search depends on your profile, so we skip shortcuts that put it at risk.

We will

  • Keep your business name exactly as it appears on your signs, paperwork and vans
  • Log every change with a date and a reason, so any appeal has a clear history behind it
  • Make big edits one at a time, spread over several days
  • Prepare appeals with proof such as photos of signs, leases, licences and utility bills
  • Warn you when a category change would remove a feature you use
  • Keep you as the main owner of the account, not us

We will not

  • Add service keywords or city names to your business name
  • Set up or keep a profile at an address where nobody works during listed hours
  • Post made-up questions and answers dressed up as customer questions
  • Buy, write, reward or filter reviews, or promise to remove reviews that follow Google’s rules
  • Promise that a suspended profile will come back, because Google makes that call
  • Keep a closed location live just to hold on to its reviews

Month to month

What our Google Business Profile optimization service does each month

  1. Find every profile and secure access

We find every profile linked to your business, including forgotten ones. We check verification, win back ownership where someone else holds it and remove managers who have left.

You get: A map of who has access, and a verified owner account you control

  2. Fix the core details

Name, address or service area, categories and hours. These fields decide what your listing can show and how risky it is, so we change them one at a time.

You get: Corrected core details with a dated change log

  3. Fill in everything else

We write out your services, add products where your category allows, complete the attributes, write the description and sort your photos by type.

You get: A fully completed profile

  4. Keep it up to date

We post on an agreed schedule, answer questions, set holiday hours early, refresh photos and check what the public uploads.

You get: A shared calendar of posts and updates

  5. Watch for changes

We watch for suggested edits, automatic updates, duplicate profiles and category changes, and alert you to anything you did not approve.

You get: Change alerts and a monthly report of anything unusual

  6. Roll it out across locations

Location groups, shared rules for names, categories and attributes, and bulk updates for anything that is the same everywhere. Local details are still written for each location.

You get: A location standard your team can use without us

Questions

Questions owners ask about their Google listing

Can you get a suspended Business Profile reinstated?

Sometimes. An appeal works when we can prove the profile follows Google’s rules, with signage, a lease, utility bills or a licence. It fails when the business itself breaks those rules.

We tell you which case you are in before you pay for anything. If nobody works at the address during listed hours, no appeal wording will fix that.

Someone changed our opening hours. How is that possible?

Google treats your profile as its own record, so the public can suggest edits and Google can update details from other sources it trusts.

The fix is monitoring. We watch for changes, undo wrong ones quickly and keep a log that shows any edit that keeps coming back.

Do posts do anything?

Yes. They put an offer, a closure or a new service where people are already looking, in space a competitor cannot take.

Posts won’t move you up the rankings, and we won’t sell them that way. We post on a small, steady schedule.

We have a lot of locations. Is this done one at a time?

No. We manage many profiles at once, using location groups, shared rules for names and categories, and one master list for hours, services and attributes.

We only work location by location on the details that differ: the staff, the services offered there, parking and photos.

Can we put our main service in the business name?

No. The name field must match the name on your signs and paperwork. Adding keywords is one of the most common reasons Google suspends or edits a profile.

Competitors often report it, which is why profiles that kept extra keywords for years can suddenly get caught.
