Bing and Google

Where Bing works differently from Google

Good content works the same way on both. The tools, crawl settings and ways to report changes are what differ.

Practical differences between Google Search and Bing that change how we work

Crawl scheduling you controlSearch Console no longer has a crawl rate setting. Google manages crawl rate automaticallyCrawl Control lets you set crawl volume by hour of day, and Bingbot follows crawl-delay in robots.txt

What we do

What we do in Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing is the only AI source with its own console that tells you what happened. With the others, you work it out from the answers.

Order matters. There is no point improving content for a search engine that is not crawling you.

  • Verify the site, or import it straight from Google Search Console if that is faster
  • Read the crawl information to see the response codes Bingbot gets, before assuming anything about content
  • Check robots.txt for Bingbot rules and for an old crawl-delay line that nobody removed
  • Check CDN, firewall and server rate limits for bot rules that block Bingbot but let Googlebot through
  • Go through Index Explorer folder by folder to find sections that are crawled but not indexed. That is a different problem from not being crawled
  • Run Site Scan and fix the findings, starting with whatever stops Bing crawling
  • Set up IndexNow with a hosted key file, or switch it on at your CDN if it supports it
  • Build IndexNow into publishing so it runs every time a page changes, with no monthly chore
  • Load the most important page templates without JavaScript and check the key text is in the server HTML
  • Check structured data for Bing as well as Google, and remove anything the visible page does not back up
  • Report Bing as its own channel, so it is not lumped in with "other"

Common problems

Four common reasons Copilot visibility is low

Check these four causes first. None of them is about content.

Bot protection is blocking Bingbot.
Googlebot is on almost every default allow list; Bingbot often is not. Strict CDN bot rules, a firewall rule written for scrapers, or server rate limits can send errors to Bingbot for months without showing in Google Search Console. Bing Webmaster Tools’ crawl information shows it in about ten minutes.
An old crawl-delay line is still slowing Bing down.
Google ignores crawl-delay in robots.txt; Bing follows it. A line added years ago for a struggling server keeps slowing Bing long after that server is gone, and nobody notices because they check Google’s tools.
Nothing tells Bing when a page changes.
Without IndexNow, changes wait for a recrawl, which on a large site can take weeks. Meanwhile Copilot may answer from an old version with out-of-date prices or services. Building IndexNow into publishing cuts that wait to minutes.
The pages are indexed, but the useful text is missing.
A template that loads its main content with JavaScript can be indexed as an almost empty page. It looks fine to a visitor, but without JavaScript the pricing, specifications or answer are gone: the text Copilot would have quoted.

Four checks, in order

Where a site drops out between Bingbot and a Copilot answer

Bing is the one AI source where each of these questions has a clear answer in its own console. Work through them in order. There is no point judging a page that Bing is not crawling.

A four-step check running from Bingbot’s access to Copilot answers.
  1. Is Bingbot getting successful responses in the crawl information?

Yes: Bing is crawling you, so the problem is further along.

No: Start with your CDN, firewall and rate limits. Googlebot is usually allowed. Bingbot often is not.

  2. Does robots.txt still have a crawl-delay line?

Yes: Bing follows it and Google ignores it, so an old line may still be slowing Bing down.

No: Nothing you wrote is holding the crawl back. Next, check what Bing did with the pages.

  3. Does Index Explorer show sections crawled but not indexed?

Yes: That is a separate problem from access. It usually points at the page template.

No: The pages are in the index. The last question is what is on them.

  4. Is the main text there without JavaScript?

Yes: Access, indexing and rendering are fine. What is left is whether the page is worth quoting.

No: The page is nearly empty to Bing, and the text Copilot would have quoted is missing.

Why it matters

Copilot is a work tool first

Copilot’s value comes from where it sits: in Windows, the Edge sidebar and the Microsoft 365 apps, right there when someone at work has a question about a supplier, a product specification or a process.

For a business selling to consumers on phones, that matters less. For one selling to organisations that run on Microsoft, Copilot reaches well-qualified buyers at their desks with a job to do.

Microsoft 365 Copilot uses two sources: a company’s own documents and messages, which you can’t see or influence, and the public web through Bing. Bing is a normal search index you can check and fix with free tools, which is rare in AI search.

It is a modest case. Bing won’t replace your Google work, but it is a clear, manageable job with a console attached and results you can check directly.

Questions

Questions about Bing and Copilot

Bing is tiny in our analytics. Why would we spend anything on it?

Because Bing traffic is only part of the value. Bing results feed Microsoft Copilot in Windows, the Edge sidebar and the Microsoft 365 apps, so your buyers may read Bing results through Copilot without ever visiting bing.com.

If your buyers are consumers on phones who rarely use Windows, the case is weaker: fix the Bing indexing basics once and move on.

How do we know if Bingbot is being blocked?

Check the crawl information in Bing Webmaster Tools. It shows the response codes Bingbot received, which Google Search Console will never show. Then check robots.txt for a Bingbot rule or old crawl-delay line, your CDN or firewall bot rules, and any server rate limits.

Strict bot protection blocks Bingbot far more often than Googlebot, because Googlebot is on almost every default allow list and Bingbot often is not. It is one of the most common causes and usually quick to fix.

What is IndexNow and do we need it?

IndexNow is an open standard that tells search engines a page has changed the moment it changes, instead of waiting for a recrawl. You host a key file, then send page addresses singly or in batches, and Bing acts on them.

Any site that publishes or updates pages regularly should have it, and it costs almost nothing if your CDN or platform has it built in. It helps Bing find changes faster. It does not improve rankings.

Is Bing SEO different from Google SEO?

The basics are the same: pages need to be crawlable, indexable, clear, original and well structured. You don’t need a separate content plan for Bing.

The tools differ. Bing lets you schedule crawling and follows crawl-delay in robots.txt; Google retired its crawl rate setting. Bing’s Index Explorer shows status folder by folder, where Google shows one page at a time, and Bing adds a free Site Scan crawler and IndexNow.

Can you get us cited in Copilot answers?

No. Nobody can promise that. We remove every reason Copilot can’t use your pages: unblock the crawler, get pages indexed, put the key text in the page HTML, and write claims clearly enough to be quoted accurately.

Microsoft decides which pages Copilot uses. Being well indexed makes you eligible, not guaranteed, so eligibility is what we work on.

Does JavaScript rendering matter more for Bing?

Yes, in practice, and more when Copilot uses the page for an answer. Bing can run JavaScript, but text already in the server HTML is available more reliably, sooner and in full.

Load your five most important page templates without JavaScript and read what comes back. If the pricing, service description or answer is missing, you have found the problem.

Find out what Bing has indexed on your site

Give us access to Bing Webmaster Tools, or five minutes to set it up. We will show you what Bingbot is receiving, how much of your site is indexed, and whether anything is being blocked.
