Improve AI search visibility
Improve your AI search visibility when ChatGPT leaves you out
To improve AI search visibility, first find whether ChatGPT or Google’s AI leaves you out, uses old facts about you, or mentions you and sends nobody.

Why it happens
Why ChatGPT and Google’s AI leave you out
Ran one prompt and didn’t like the answer? Work out which of these three it is, because each needs a different fix.
- You’re not mentioned at all.
- The AI names three competitors and skips you. AI tools learn about your category from other sites: publications, comparison pages, forums and directories. If none mention you, there’s nothing to find, and sometimes your content is credited to someone else. The fix is to get talked about on those sites, with your name tied clearly to your content.
- You’re mentioned, but the facts are wrong.
- Old prices, a service you dropped, a former address. The source is nearly always something you published and forgot: an old page Google still indexes, an old press release, a directory profile under a former name. Find every out-of-date version, take it down, and make the current one clear.
- You’re mentioned and nobody visits.
- The answer is accurate and positive but brings no visits. Often that’s fine: the AI answered the question and your name reached buyers while they compared options. It’s only a problem if branded searches, direct visits and enquiries are flat too.
Fix in order
Which AI visibility problem to fix first
These problems sit in order on one path. Fix the earliest broken step first. Fixing a later one changes nothing until then.
- 1Someone asks about your category — Everyone this could reach. In some categories few people use AI tools yet. Check that before you spend anything.
- 2You’re among the names returned — A coverage problem. You fix it on other sites, where your category gets discussed. Markup on your own site can’t replace that.Missing from every site that discusses your category
- 3The description is current — A consistency problem. The source is nearly always something you published. Take down every out-of-date version of your facts.Prices from a page you forgot to remove
- 4Someone acts on it — Often not a failure. It’s only one if branded searches, direct visits and enquiries are flat too.The answer settled the question, so nobody needed to visit
Tell them apart
Missing, wrong, or mentioned with no visits?
"AI isn’t working for us" can mean three different problems. Here’s how to tell them apart.
| Dimension | Not mentioned at all | Mentioned with wrong facts | Mentioned, nobody visits |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | Competitors named and you’re not, across repeat runs of the same prompt | You’re named, but the facts are old, mixed up or belong to another business | Accurate, positive mentions and no change in visits or branded searches |
| Where the cause is | On other sites. The sites that discuss your category leave you out | Usually your own old pages and profiles you never took down | In the answer itself, which often settles the question with no click |
| What fixes it | Getting mentioned and quoted on sites you don’t own | Correcting every public version of your facts, then keeping one main version current | Sometimes nothing. Otherwise, target questions where people still need to visit |
| How you’ll know it worked | You show up more often across a fixed set of test prompts | Repeat runs stop repeating the old fact | Branded searches and direct visits rise, even if AI referrals don’t |
| What nobody can fix | A promised place in the answer. AI tools change how they pick sources without notice | The AI model itself. You fix the sources, never the model | How many answers need no click at all |
Tracking it
How to track your AI search visibility
There’s no rank tracker for AI answers. Each answer is written fresh, changes between runs and depends on who’s asking and where.
So use a fixed set of test prompts that match how your buyers ask, run on a schedule across the AI tools that matter in your market. Each run records four things: did you show up, how were you described, were the facts right, and which sources were shown.
One run tells you nothing. Thirty runs over three months show whether things are moving.
Watch visits from AI tools, branded searches and direct visits too; branded searches often rise before AI referrals do. And if a new customer says ChatGPT recommended you, write it down.
Test it yourself
Prompts to try before you pay for help
Run each prompt three times, in a fresh chat, on at least two AI tools. Write down what comes back.
These are example prompts, not search volumes. Swap in your own category, city and competitors, and keep the wording the same each time so you can compare.
About your business
These show wrong facts fastest. Note every old detail, then find the page or profile it came from.
- What does [your company] do?
- Is [your company] any good?
- Who founded [your company] and where are they based?
- How much does [your company] charge?
About your category
These show if you are missing. Left out run after run? You need more mentions on other sites.
- Who are the best [service] providers in [city]?
- I need a [service] for a business like mine. Where should I start?
- What should I look for when hiring a [service] provider?
Shortlists and comparisons
Shows whether you make the shortlist, and whose words describe your category.
- Compare [your company] and [competitor]
- What are the alternatives to [competitor]?
- Which [service] provider is better for a small business?
Objections
Old reviews, forum threads and forgotten profiles show up here. Uncomfortable, and very useful.
- Are there any complaints about [your company]?
- Why would I not use [your company]?
- Is [your company] expensive compared to alternatives?
These are example searches from keyword research and public search data. Before we suggest anything, we check how often people search for them in your area.
Our limits
What we promise about AI visibility, and what we don’t
AI search is new, and it’s easy to promise things nobody can check. Here’s where we stand.
What we do
- Record how AI tools describe you today, before we suggest any changes
- Track a repeated set of test prompts and show you every result
- Work out whether you’re missing or described wrongly before you spend anything
- Tell you when AI tools disagree with each other
- Tell you when few people in your category use AI tools yet
What we don’t claim
- That we can get you into any AI answer
- A visibility score dressed up as a ranking
- That a file or some markup will make an AI tool cite you
- That we have a deal with any AI company
- That one good week is a trend
Questions
Common questions about AI search visibility
Can you get my business cited in AI answers?
Nobody can promise that. AI answers are written fresh each time, change from person to person, and the AI companies change how they pick sources without notice.
We can make you more likely to be picked: your facts matching and current everywhere, a presence in the sources AI tools use for your category, and pages where key facts are easy to quote.
How do you measure something that changes every time you ask?
With a fixed set of test questions that match how your buyers ask, run on a schedule across the AI tools that matter in your market.
Each run records whether you showed up, how you were described, whether the facts were right and which sources were shown. Repeat runs turn a noisy answer into a trend, alongside visits from AI tools. Any single "AI visibility score" is a made-up number.
The AI says wrong things about us. Where does that come from?
Usually from your own old pages and profiles: a pricing page Google still indexes, an old press release, a directory listing under a former name. AI tools are very good at finding the version of your business you forgot to take down.
The fix is to find every out-of-date version of your facts, correct it or remove it, and make the current version easy to find. Nobody can edit the AI model directly.
Will adding a file to my site make assistants cite me?
No. Some proposed files tell AI crawlers your content rules, and they’re worth watching, but none makes an AI tool cite you.
You get picked by being a source worth using: accurate, specific, current, and talked about by other sites.
Is this just SEO under a different name?
It overlaps a lot, but it’s not the same. Both reward clear, useful, accurate pages, and a site Google can’t crawl won’t get used by either.
AI answers reward a short, quotable fact more than a long page, often use sources that don’t rank in Google, and often answer without sending anyone to your site.
We appear in answers but get almost no visits from them. Is that failure?
Not always. Many AI answers settle the question on the spot, and a mention puts your name in front of people while they compare options.
Check the mention is accurate and positive, then whether branded searches and direct visits are rising. If you’re described well and nothing else moves, the mention may be reaching people who won’t buy.
