First, which one

Three different things get called a suspension

A suspended or disabled profile: Google says it may suspend or disable Business Profiles that do not follow its guidelines. The profile stops showing, or you lose the ability to manage it.

A restricted account: when the Google account that manages profiles breaks policy, every profile it manages can be suspended and it cannot create or claim new ones. This one is appealed from the account first.

A review restriction: under Google’s fake engagement policy, a profile can be blocked from receiving new reviews for a period, have existing reviews unpublished, or show a warning that fake reviews were removed. The profile itself stays up.

Read the notice or email carefully before doing anything else. It tells you which of the three you have, and each has a different route back.

Common triggers

Guideline breaches that commonly lead to a suspension

Each of these is a mismatch between the profile and the business in the real world, as Google’s guidelines define it.

Keywords or locations added to the business name
Google’s guidelines say the name should reflect the real-world name, without marketing taglines, service or location details, phone numbers or other additions.
An address customers cannot visit
PO boxes and virtual offices are not allowed. A business that serves customers at their location and has no storefront should hide its address and set service areas instead.
More than one profile for the same location
The guidelines allow one profile per location, with limited exceptions for departments and individual practitioners who meet the stated conditions.
A category or business type that is not eligible
Some businesses cannot have a profile at all, and service-area businesses cannot offer age-restricted products such as alcohol, cannabis or weapons.
Review incentives or gating
Offering discounts for reviews, paying for them, or pressuring customers on the premises breaks the Maps content policy and can lead to review restrictions.
A name change on a verified profile
Google’s help page says a business that changes its name after verification might need to verify again. That is not a suspension, but it can look like one while verification is pending.

Reinstatement

How to prepare and submit the appeal

Fix the profile first, gather evidence second, appeal once. An appeal for a profile that still breaks the guidelines is asking Google to approve the breach.

  1. Read the notice and identify the restriction

Profile, account or reviews. If it is the account, appeal the account restriction first, separately, before appealing any profile.

You get: The restriction type and the policy area named

  2. Check the profile against the guidelines

Name, address or service areas, primary category, phone number and website. Anything that does not match the real business, correct it so the appeal is about a compliant profile.

You get: A profile that matches the business as it trades

  3. Gather evidence that shows the same details

Google lists business registration, licences, tax certificates and utility bills. They should carry the business name and address exactly as the profile states them. Photos of signage and premises can help show the business is real.

You get: A folder of documents ready to upload

  4. Submit through the appeals tool

Choose the affected profile, review the violation details and submit. The evidence form must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening it, which is why the documents come first. For more than ten profiles, Google asks for a spreadsheet with evidence and profile IDs.

You get: A submitted appeal and its confirmation

  5. Wait, and change nothing major

Do not create a new profile for the same business, and avoid further edits to name, address or category while the appeal is under review.

While you wait

What helps and what makes it worse

Helps

  • A profile that matches your signage, registration documents and website
  • Evidence that shows the same name and address as the profile
  • Hiding the address and setting service areas if customers do not visit you
  • Keeping one account, owned by the business, as the profile owner

Makes it worse

  • Creating a replacement profile while the appeal is pending
  • Appealing without fixing the breach the notice names
  • Paying anyone who claims a special relationship with Google to reinstate you
  • Asking customers for reviews in bulk to rebuild the profile quickly

Questions

Common questions about suspended profiles

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?

Google says it may suspend or disable profiles that do not follow its guidelines for representing a business. The notice usually names the policy area. Check the profile against those guidelines — name, address, category, website, phone — and against the fake engagement policy if you have been asking for reviews.

How long does a Business Profile appeal take?

Google’s help page on suspended profiles does not give a timeframe, so anyone quoting one is guessing. Submit a complete appeal once, with the evidence the form asks for, and watch for the email reply.

Can I create a new profile while I wait?

No. Google’s help page says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business while the appeal is under review. A second profile for the same location also breaks the one-profile-per-location rule.

What evidence should I include?

Google lists business registration, licences, tax certificates and utility bills such as electricity, phone, water or internet. The evidence should show the business name and address exactly as the profile states them. Once you open the evidence form you have 60 minutes to submit it, so gather the files first.

My whole account is restricted, not just one profile. What now?

An account restriction suspends every profile the account manages and stops it creating or claiming new ones. Google says to appeal the account restriction first, separately, before appealing individual profiles.

Want a second pair of eyes on the profile before you appeal?

A check of the profile against Google’s guidelines is the cheapest part of the process to get right, and the part an appeal depends on. Nobody can promise reinstatement; a compliant profile and the right evidence are what you control.
