The short answer
What should an association website include?
An association website should make joining and renewing easy, with each membership category, what it includes and how renewal works stated before payment. It also needs a members-only area for resources, events with online registration, a searchable member directory, and email preferences members control. Trade associations should publish their antitrust policy and keep price talk off member forums.

- Hosting and care

What every association website includes
A join page that answers “what do I get?”
Each membership category lists what it includes, who it is for and its dues, so a prospect can choose without phoning. A short questionnaire points the unsure to the right category before checkout.
Renewals finished in a minute
Members renew from a link in the reminder, with the category, the dues and any automatic renewal terms shown beside the button. Cancelling is as easy online as joining was, which some laws now require.
A members’ area worth signing in for
Resources, recordings, templates and the member rate on events sit behind one sign-in, with the public side showing enough of each to make joining tempting. Staff choose page by page what is open and what is members-only.
Events with member pricing built in
Conference and webinar registration recognises a signed-in member and applies the member rate, with sponsor sessions labelled as sponsored. Attendees get calendar files, venue access details and the recording afterwards.
A public directory that sends members work
People search members by service, region or credential, and each member edits its own profile. The page explains what membership does and does not vouch for, so the directory never reads as an endorsement.
Email preferences members control
Notices the bylaws require go to every member, while newsletters and partner offers are opt-in topics with consent recorded and an unsubscribe in each message. That keeps the list clean under CASL, CAN-SPAM and PECR alike.
Advocacy you can point to
Positions, submissions and a bill tracker show members what their dues achieve, and the public side builds the association’s standing with officials. Where lobbying registration or dues notices apply, they are linked from the same page.
Learning and CPD records
Courses, exams and webinars add hours to a member’s record automatically, with certificates to download. Members see their progress against the year’s requirement before the deadline, not after it.
Compliance
The rules for associations and member organisations, built in
Association websites hold member data, send member email and gather competitors in one place. These are the rules about consent, competition, dues and member lists we design around in Canada, the US and the UK, each linked to the body that sets it.
Sources gathered October 1, 2026. This is how our designs handle these rules, not legal advice: rules change and differ by province and state, so your association counsel or governance adviser has the final word, and you approve every page before it goes live.
- Canada
Member email under CASL
Canada’s anti-spam law lets a non-profit club, association or voluntary organisation rely on implied consent to send commercial messages to its members, for up to two years after membership ends. Every message still needs the sender’s identity and a working unsubscribe. The designs record consent for newsletters and partner offers separately from member notices.
CRTC — Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation guidance on implied consent
- US
CAN-SPAM: address, honest headers and opt-out
Commercial email must carry a valid postal address and a working opt-out, honoured within 10 business days. Messages about changes to a membership the recipient already holds count as transactional or relationship messages and are largely exempt. Renewal notices and promotions are therefore sent as separate streams.
- UK
PECR: marketing email needs consent or the soft opt-in
Unsolicited marketing email to individuals needs their consent or must meet every condition of the soft opt-in, including a chance to refuse at sign-up and in every message. UK sign-up forms ask about marketing separately from membership, with the box unticked.

Trade associations and price information
The FTC says it is illegal to use a trade association to control or suggest members’ prices, and that sharing current prices or data that identifies a competitor can raise antitrust concerns. Benchmarking pages show only aged, aggregated figures, forums carry the antitrust policy, and no design gives members a place to post prices.

The Competition Act and association rules
The Competition Bureau treats rules and initiatives adopted by members who compete as agreements between competitors, and advises sharing sensitive data only in aggregate through a third party. Member surveys on the site report pooled results, and meeting pages link agendas and the competition policy.

Telling members the lobbying share of dues
A 501(c)(6) association that spends on lobbying or political activity must, when it bills or receives dues, tell members the share that is not deductible as a business expense, unless an exception applies, or pay a proxy tax instead. The dues page and the renewal invoice have a place for that notice.

- California
Automatically renewing dues
Where a membership renews automatically, California requires the terms to be clear and conspicuous next to the consent, express affirmative consent, an annual reminder, and online cancellation if the member joined online. The renewal box is unticked, the terms sit beside it, and a cancel link lives in the members’ area.

What the member list may be used for
Under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, a member list obtained from the corporation may be used only for efforts to influence members’ voting, requisitioning a meeting, or other matters relating to the corporation’s affairs. The directory shows only what members chose to publish, and exports stay with staff.

Questions
Associations and member organisations: common questions
- How much does an association website cost?
- An association website of up to 25 pages is $1,500 paid upfront, or $150 a month for 12 months, and it is yours after the 12th payment. A larger site of up to about 100 pages is $4,000, or $400 a month. Hosting and care is $29 or $49 a month. Prices are in US dollars.
- Can the website connect to our association management software?
- It sends joins, renewals and event registrations to any system that accepts them by email, webhook or API, and can read member status for sign-in where your software allows it. A direct, two-way connection to a particular association management or CRM platform is scoped with an advisor and quoted before work starts.
- Do we need consent to email our members?
- It depends on where they are and what you send. In Canada, CASL implies consent for a non-profit association’s commercial messages to its members, for up to two years after membership ends. US law requires an opt-out and a postal address, and UK law usually needs consent for marketing. Notices your bylaws require are a separate matter. The site records what each person agreed to, so newsletters and partner offers go only to those who chose them. Your counsel has the final word on what applies.
- Can members manage their own directory profiles?
- Yes. Each member signs in and edits its own listing, choosing what the public sees, and staff approve changes if you want a check. The directory explains what membership does and does not vouch for, and it never publishes a member’s details without that member’s choice to list them.
- Is an association app or member portal worth it?
- For associations whose members return often, for CPD, events or resources, a portal or app turns renewals, tickets and learning records into a few taps. For a small association that mostly sends a newsletter, a well-built members’ area on the website does the same job without a separate app to maintain.
- Will my association website rank on Google?
- It launches with the technical SEO done: fast pages, clean structure, structured data, local pages and redirects from your old site. To keep climbing, a BOOSTD SEO plan from $149 a month runs 262 checks on your site every week, fixes what is safe to fix and gets the rest ready for your OK.No one can promise a position on Google, and we never do. Google warns businesses about anyone who does.
- How long does an association website take to build?
- About 4 weeks for a local site and about 8 weeks for a larger one, counted from the day we have your content, logo, photos and licence details. A larger site is planned with an advisor first, so its timeline is confirmed in writing before any work starts.Moving member logins and testing join, renew and event flows end to end are planned in from the start, so members are not locked out on launch day.
- Can I get one of these association website designs?
- Yes. Each is a complete, ready-to-launch website design BOOSTD made for associations and member organisations. Pick one and we make it yours, with your name, colours, photos, content and the licence or compliance details your industry expects, from $150 a month and yours after 12 payments.Approved client sites are shown with a “Client work” tag, and only with the client’s written permission.
