The short answer

What should a nonprofit website include?

A nonprofit website needs a short donation form with monthly giving, receipts or acknowledgments that meet tax rules, and a clear route for people seeking help that carries no fundraising ask. It should take volunteer sign-ups, list events, publish annual reports and filings, show the charity’s registration details, and report impact only from figures the organization can document.

Built in

What every nonprofit website includes

  • A donation form that finishes

Few fields, monthly giving as an option, wallets and cards, tribute and in-memory gifts, and an instant receipt by email, on a page that loads fast on a phone and never makes the donor create an account.

  • Receipts and acknowledgments done properly

In Canada, official receipts with every element the CRA requires, issued from your donor system; in the US, acknowledgments that state what, if anything, the donor received in return. Event tickets and raffles are handled separately from gifts.

  • A help route with no ask in it

People looking for your services get their own path from the menu, written for them, with eligibility, hours and contact options, and no donation banner or pop-up anywhere along it.

  • Volunteer sign-up that reaches a person

Roles with their duties and time commitment, shift sign-up, waivers and screening steps where a role needs them, and every application sent to the coordinator for that program.

  • Impact reporting from real records

Program pages and an impact page built from the figures in your annual report or program data, with the period and source beside each number, and updated when the report is. Nothing is estimated on the website’s behalf.

  • Events and peer-to-peer fundraising

Galas, runs and drives with registration and tickets, and personal or team fundraising pages where your platform supports them, connected to your donor CRM where its access allows.

  • Reports, filings and governance

Annual reports, audited statements, board members and, in the US, your Form 990, on one transparency page that funders, journalists and careful donors check before they give.

  • Donor CRM kept as the record

Gifts, receipts and volunteer records stay in the donor management system you use, such as a fundraising CRM or online giving platform, with the website feeding it rather than keeping its own list.

Compliance

The rules for nonprofits and charities, handled in the design

Charities answer to tax authorities, state regulators and donors, and the donation page is where those obligations meet the public. These are the rules the designs are built around; each one links to its source.

Sources gathered October 1, 2026. This is how our designs handle these rules, not legal advice: rules change and differ by province and state, so your lawyer, auditor or charity regulator has the final word, and you approve every page before it goes live.

  • Canada

What an official donation receipt contains

The CRA lists what every official donation receipt must show, including a statement that it is an official receipt for income tax purposes, a unique serial number, the charity’s registration number, the eligible amount of the gift and the CRA’s name and website. Online giving issues receipts from a system that fills in each element.

  • US

Written acknowledgments and quid pro quo gifts

IRS Publication 1771 says a donor needs a written acknowledgment for any single contribution of 250 dollars or more, and a charity must give a disclosure statement when a payment over 75 dollars is partly a gift and partly for goods or services, such as a gala ticket. Donation emails and event checkouts carry that wording.

  • US · state law

    State solicitation disclosure statements

Many states require charities to register before soliciting their residents, and some require a set disclosure statement. Florida, for example, requires its statement on any web page that processes contributions or gives a mailing address or phone number for them. The donation page and receipts carry each statement you need.

Florida Statutes — s. 496.411, Disclosure requirements and duties of charitable organizations

  • Canada

    Fundraising that does not mislead

The CRA’s fundraising guidance expects charities to be truthful about fundraising costs, revenues and practices, and cautions that a claim that all of every gift reaches programs can be deceptive when there are fundraising costs. Impact and “where your gift goes” sections use your real reported figures and avoid that claim.

  • Canada

    Fundraising emails under CASL

CASL exempts commercial electronic messages sent by or for a registered charity whose primary purpose is raising funds, but a message mainly promoting a sponsor’s offer is not covered. Sign-up still asks for consent plainly, and every newsletter names the charity and carries an unsubscribe, which is good practice either way.

CRTC — Frequently asked questions about Canada’s anti-spam legislation

  • US

    Form 990 on the website

Exempt organizations must make their annual information return available for public inspection, and the IRS says posting an exact copy on a website that anyone can view and download without a fee makes it widely available. The transparency page holds the last three returns.

Questions

Nonprofits and charities: common questions

How much does a nonprofit website cost?
A nonprofit website of up to 25 pages is $1,500 paid upfront, or $150 a month for 12 months, and it is yours after the 12th payment. A larger site of up to about 100 pages is $4,000, or $400 a month. Hosting and care is $29 or $49 a month. Prices are in US dollars.
Can our charity website issue donation receipts automatically?
Yes, through your donor or giving system. In Canada each official receipt needs every element the CRA lists, including a serial number, your registration number and the eligible amount; in the US donors need a written acknowledgment for larger gifts. The donation form passes the gift to a system that issues these at once, and your finance lead approves the template.
Do we need a state disclosure statement on our donation page?
It depends where you solicit. Many US states require registration before asking their residents for gifts, and some, Florida among them, require a set disclosure statement on web pages that take donations. We place each statement your counsel identifies on the donation page, confirmation and receipt, and keep it updated when you register in more states.
How do we show impact without inventing numbers?
By using only figures from your annual report, audited statements or program records, each shown with its period and source. Where you do not yet measure something, the page describes the work in words instead. The CRA warns that misleading fundraising claims can cost a charity its registration, and donors check, so an honest page persuades better.
Can volunteers sign up and choose shifts on the website?
Yes. Each role lists its duties, time commitment and any screening it needs, and volunteers pick shifts from a calendar, sign a waiver online where you use one, and get reminders. Applications go to the coordinator for that program, or into the volunteer management tool you already use where its access allows.
Can we also ask for a volunteer app, SEO or fundraising marketing?
Yes. The request form covers a nonprofit website, a volunteer or donor app, SEO and fundraising marketing, and you can pick any mix. Tell us your donor platform, your programs and where you raise money. Networks with many chapters are quoted too: book a demo and mark it multi-location.
Will my nonprofit website rank on Google?
It launches with the technical SEO done: fast pages, clean structure, structured data, local pages and redirects from your old site. To keep climbing, a BOOSTD SEO plan from $149 a month runs 262 checks on your site every week, fixes what is safe to fix and gets the rest ready for your OK.No one can promise a position on Google, and we never do. Google warns businesses about anyone who does.
Can I get one of these nonprofit website designs?
Yes. Each is a complete, ready-to-launch website design BOOSTD made for nonprofits and charities. Pick one and we make it yours, with your name, colours, photos, content and the licence or compliance details your industry expects, from $150 a month and yours after 12 payments.Approved client sites are shown with a “Client work” tag, and only with the client’s written permission.
