Websites for general contractors

General contractor website design that brings in the right projects

Websites for general contractors that win bigger, better-fit projects: a portfolio organised by project type, a scoping form that asks about budget range, timeline and plans before the first meeting, your licence or registration number wherever the state expects it, and pages that explain how you manage a build from permit to handover.

The short answer

What should a general contractor website include?

A general contractor website needs a portfolio of finished projects sorted by type, a project enquiry form that collects scope, timing and drawings, a clear description of how you run a job, and your licence or home improvement registration number wherever your state requires it in advertising. Deposit and cancellation wording must match the contract rules where you work.

Built in

What every general contractor website includes

  • A portfolio sorted by project type

Additions, renovations, new builds and commercial fit-outs each get a filterable gallery, and every project page records the brief, the scope and the finished result, so prospects find work like theirs in two clicks.

  • A scoping form that pre-qualifies

The enquiry asks for project type, timing, budget range, location and drawings, and routes small repairs elsewhere, so your estimator spends site visits on jobs you want to win.

  • Your process, explained before the first meeting

A plain page walks through proposal, permits, scheduling, change orders and closeout, which answers the questions owners usually save for the kitchen-table meeting.

  • Licence and registration fields, entered once

State licence, home improvement registration, bond and insurance are stored once and printed in the footer, on enquiry forms and on proposal emails, in the format each state asks for.

  • A subcontractor and supplier page

Trades can apply to work with you and upload licence and insurance certificates, which keeps recruitment off your phone and gives you a bench for busy seasons.

  • Deposit wording that fits the contract law

Pages that talk about payment schedules follow the deposit and progress-payment rules where you work, so the site never promises terms your contract is not allowed to carry.

Found locally

How general contractors get found in the areas they serve

Google runs the Business Profile and Local Services Ads programmes and decides who qualifies. We build the site and the area pages to Google’s rules and keep your profile accurate. Badges such as Google Verified (which replaced Google Guaranteed and Google Screened in 2025) are Google’s to grant, not ours.

  1. 01

    Google Business Profile

Primary category “General contractor”, with secondary categories only for work you really do, such as “Home builder” or “Construction company”, and project photos added as jobs finish.

  2. 02

    Local Services Ads

Where Google offers Local Services Ads for general contracting in your area, Google runs its own licence and insurance checks and may grant its Google Verified badge. You apply to Google; the site makes those leads trust you.

  3. 03

Project pages instead of doorway pages

A page per town only works when it shows real work there. We build area pages from finished projects in each place, with permit and building notes, rather than duplicating text under new town names.

  4. 04

    Measure enquiries, not just calls

Contracting leads arrive as forms with drawings more often than as calls, so form submissions are tracked by source and project type, showing which channels bring the jobs you actually want.

Compliance

The rules for general contractors, handled in the design

For general contractors the rules sit in two places: the ad, which many states say must carry a licence or registration number, and the contract, which sets deposits, cancellation and lien notices. The concepts keep the website from promising anything the contract cannot carry.

Sources gathered October 1, 2026. This is how our designs handle these rules, not legal advice: rules change and differ by province and state, so your state contractor licensing board, consumer affairs office or construction lawyer has the final word, and you approve every page before it goes live.

  • California

CSLB licence number on the website and ads

California requires the contractor’s licence number in all advertising for work that needs a licence, and CSLB treats websites, directory listings and other electronic ads as advertising. The number appears in the footer, on project pages and on the enquiry form.

CSLB — Advertising guidelines for contractors

  • Florida

Certificate number in every bid and ad

Florida requires the contractor’s certification or registration number, or the business’s certificate of authority number, in every offer of services, bid, contract or advertisement. The site prints it beside the company name in the header area and footer.

    Florida Statutes 489.119 (Florida Senate)

  • New Jersey · Pennsylvania

    Home improvement registration in advertising

New Jersey says registered home improvement contractors must display a number beginning “HIC reg.#” in all ads, and Pennsylvania’s Attorney General says the PA registration number must appear clearly in ads and contracts. The footer uses each state’s own format.

New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs — HIC regulations

  • California

Deposit limits and cancellation in home improvement contracts

California’s home improvement contract rules cap the down payment at the lesser of 1,000 dollars or a tenth of the price, give three business days to cancel (five for buyers 65 and over), and from 2026 add an email address for cancellation notices. The site never advertises a large deposit to book.

California Business and Professions Code 7159 (California Legislative Information)

  • US

Cancelling contracts signed at the owner’s home

For contracts a client signs at home, the FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule adds a federal three-business-day window to cancel most sales of 25 dollars or more, and the contractor must supply a written notice of it. The site avoids “no cancellations” wording and the process page explains how cancellation works.

FTC — Cooling-off period for sales made at home or other locations

  • California · Florida

Lien notices belong in the contract, explained plainly online

California and Florida set lien notice duties for contracts and suppliers, such as preliminary notices and Florida’s construction lien warning. These are contract and operations duties, so the site explains them in plain English and never promises a project with no liens.

Questions

General contractors: common questions

How much does a general contractor website cost?
A general contractor website of up to 25 pages is $1,500 paid upfront, or $150 a month for 12 months, and it is yours after the 12th payment. A larger site of up to about 100 pages is $4,000, or $400 a month. Hosting and care is $29 or $49 a month. Prices are in US dollars.Project management software and plan-room subscriptions you connect are billed by their own providers.
Where should a contractor licence or registration number go on the website?
In the footer of every page, on the enquiry and bid forms, and on proposal emails, in the format each state uses. California asks for the CSLB number in websites and ads, Florida for the certificate number in every bid and ad, and New Jersey for a number beginning “HIC reg.#”.
How can my website filter out jobs that are too small?
The scoping form asks project type, timing, location and a budget range first, and can point small repairs to a handyman partner or a waiting list. Your estimator then reads complete enquiries with drawings or photos attached, and only books site visits for projects you actually want to price.
Should a general contractor show projects that are still under construction?
Yes, with the owner’s permission and without the full address. A current-jobs board or progress gallery shows you are busy and local, and each finished job can become a portfolio page. We never publish project photos, budgets or owners’ names that the owner has not approved.
What can my website say about deposits and payment schedules?
Only what your contract law allows. California caps the down payment on home improvement contracts at the lesser of 1,000 dollars or a tenth and requires a cancellation notice, so “half down to book” wording is out there. The process page describes payments tied to completed work instead.
Can architects and property managers send bid invitations through the site?
Yes. A bid-invitation form collects the project name, due date, bonding needs and a drawings link or upload, and sends it to your estimating inbox with a confirmation to the sender. Your qualifications package can sit beside it as a download, kept current from one place.
Will my general contractor website rank on Google?
It launches with the technical SEO done: fast pages, clean structure, structured data, local pages and redirects from your old site. To keep climbing, a BOOSTD SEO plan from $149 a month runs 262 checks on your site every week, fixes what is safe to fix and gets the rest ready for your OK.No one can promise a position on Google, and we never do. Google warns businesses about anyone who does.
How long does a general contractor website take to build?
About 4 weeks for a local site and about 8 weeks for a larger one, counted from the day we have your content, logo, photos and licence details. A larger site is planned with an advisor first, so its timeline is confirmed in writing before any work starts.Project write-ups take the longest, so we can launch with your best six and add the rest as you send them.
Can I get one of these contractor website designs?
Yes. Each is a complete, ready-to-launch website design BOOSTD made for general contractors. Pick one and we make it yours, with your name, colours, photos, content and the licence or compliance details your industry expects, from $150 a month and yours after 12 payments.Approved client sites are shown with a “Client work” tag, and only with the client’s written permission.
